Jack Gill is a Research Assistant at the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe (IDM) and an Affiliated Researcher at the Austrian Center for Intelligence, Propaganda and Security Studies (ACIPSS). His research focus is on the EU’s Eastern Partnership, particularly the South Caucasus, as well as foreign policy and security in Central and Eastern Europe.
EU Puts Brakes on Georgia’s Membership Hopes
On 23 June 2022, the EU granted official candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, but to Georgia it issued a new list of fulfilment criteria and a European ‘perspective’. These new criteria present a great hurdle for Georgia to overcome in order to achieve candidate status, at a time when the Russian threat looms larger than ever.
